Abstract

A qualitative study pursued in Quebec in alternative mental health centres, which describe themselves as ressources alternatives de traitement (alternative treatment resources), could help in the reconsideration of some important therapeutic issues such as the setting and the human environment of mental health services. In this study, we explored the point of view of different actors regarding many aspects of treatment, both practical and philosophical. We met 17 consumers, 17 therapists and 9 directors from 9 alternative treatment resources and compared their perspectives on treatment. The results of the study are consistent with some important ideas of an old psychiatric tradition which has placed particular emphasis on the notion of therapeutic environment, involving both the locus and the human environment of care and treatment.
