Publication: Canadian Journal of Community Mental Health

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to develop the Psychologically Violent Adolescent Practices Inventory (PVAPI), designed to measure psychological violence inflicted on parents by adolescents, an issue for which there are few reliable, valid and complete measures available. The development instrument, PVAPI, is a self-report questionnaire directed at youths aged 12 to 17. The original 39-item version was tested with a sample of 403 girls and boys recruited from classes in grades 7 to 9 (mean age: 13.7 years). Factor analysis suggested a three-factor structure, entitled Culpabilization/Intimidation (13 items), Opposition/Delinquency (6 items) and Contempt (4 items). The final 23-item overall score, as well as the three subscales, showed good construct validity and satisfactory internal consistency.
