Abstract

This study aimed to identify working conditions that could explain the level of psychological distress among Canadian workers practising regulated professions. Multilevel regression analyses were conducted using longitudinal data collected by the National Population Health Survey (NPHS) over a period of 12 years. Repeated measures over time (n1 = 1,727) were nested within individuals (n2 = 276). These analyses show that only the number of hours worked contributed significantly to the experience of psychological distress among workers practising regulated professions. The results also showed that as alcohol consumption increased, skill utilization increased the level of psychological distress.
