Police-Public Health Partnership to Serve Vulnerable Persons: Examining an Early Intervention Program

Abstract

Police services have frequent contact with people living with mental disorders, substance misuse, or homelessness. This paper describes a specialized service within a police service in Ontario, Canada, aimed to support the needs of these vulnerable individuals. Implications for police services considering implementing a similar program are discussed.

Résumé

Les services de police ont des contacts fréquents avec des personnes atteintes de troubles mentaux, de toxicomanie ou en situation d’itinérance. Cet article décrit une unité spécialisée au sein d’un service de police de l’Ontario, au Canada, visant à répondre aux besoins de ces personnes vulnérables. Les implications pour les services de police qui envisagent de mettre en œuvre un programme similaire sont analysées.
