An Examination of the Feasibility of Adventure-Based Therapy in Outpatient Care for Individuals With Psychosis

Adventure-based therapy (ABT) involves experiential learning, outdoor education, group counselling, and intrapersonal education. While it has shown benefits in a number of populations including at-risk youth, little research has focused on individuals with psychosis. The objective of this study was to employ a mixed-methods pre-post design to examine the feasibility of a 6-week ABT intervention in an outpatient care setting among 15 adults with psychosis. The intervention proved feasible with significant improvements found in engagement in the recovery process, emotional well-being, and energy level. No changes in self-esteem or global health were observed.

A Roof for Recovery: Combining the Principles of Housing First and Early Intervention in Services for People with Psychosis

The availability of affordable, youth-friendly, recovery-oriented housing for persons with first-episode psychosis is limited. We report on the conceptualization, implementation and implications of a pilot housing project combining the principles of specialized early intervention for psychosis and those of “Housing First,” which holds much promise to address this service gap.

Seeing the Bigger Picture: A Lesson for Accessible Treatment Design

A cognitive remediation group therapy was adapted to accommodate a participant with acquired blindness in an early psychosis intervention program. The modifications facilitated group inclusion and self-reported positive outcomes. This case highlights the need to consider accessibility during treatment design and transitioning therapies from research settings into clinical environments.

Use of Teletherapy for the Treatment of People with Psychotic Disorders During Covid-19 Confinement: Acceptability, Feasibility, and Challenges

Clinical teams working with clients with psychotic disorders have turned to teletherapy to continue offering services to their clients during the Covid-19 pandemic. However, few studies have focused on the challenges of teletherapy by professionals. We conducted a brief online survey with professionals working with clients with a psychotic disorder across Canada. Qualitative analysis of open-ended questions was conducted. Around 86% of the professionals we surveyed began using teletherapy at the beginning of the pandemic. Most professionals (83%) said that they would keep using teletherapy after the end of the pandemic. Numerous advantages and challenges of teletherapy were also discussed.
